The most
common reasons why wisdom teeth should be extracted are the
following:
· IMPACTION.Wisdom
tooth is “stuck”, or can grow no further into the mouth .It has failed
to emerge fully into its expected position. In most cases only a tip
of the tooth is out while the rest of the crown is covered by a mucous
membrane. Partially impacted wisdom teeth ( half in- half out) have a
very high rate of periodontal ( gum) infections. If allowed to advance,
periodontal disease can damage not just the gums but also the bone
surrounding the tooth.
· If
its position is one where you cannot clean it throroughly, then the
tooth will be at risk for developing decay.
· Impacted
wisdom teeth have an incidence of cyst or tumor formation
· Infection
in the tip of the tooth.
· Pressure
from impacted teeth can often cause damage to nearby teeth(ex tooth
crowding)
· In
case we need to implant a maxillary prosthesis, the wisdom tooth may
be a setback.
RISKS
AND COMPLICATIONS:
The most common complications are the following:
· Pain,
inflammation and bruises which are common after any operation.
· Infections
· In
the upper jawbone a crack may appear in the maxillary sinus.
· Wisdom
teeth can be positioned in the jaw in a manner in which they lie in
close proximity to nerves. During the process of extracting, these
nerves can be bruised or damaged. As a result, paresthesia= numbness
of the tongue, lip or chin may ocurr. It is usually temporary, lasting
days, weeks or a few months.
