An
Apicoectomy, or Root-End Resection, is the surgical removal of the tip
of the root and the surrounding infected tissue of an abscessed tooth.
This procedure may be necessary when inflammation and infection
persists in the area around the root tip after
root canal retreatment has failed or is
contraindicated and a cyst has probably developed.
An
apicoectomy may be also indicated for a cracked or fractured tooth.
A
peripheral compact filling is placed to seal the end of the root
canal. This is a necessary requirement to guarantee the success of the
operation. If this procedure has not been fulfilled with complete
guarantee, another surgical filling will be necessary.
